This document highlights the global progress made in WASH services for households from 2000 to 2022, with a gender-focused lens. It emphasizes the unequal burden faced by women and girls in accessing water and managing sanitation and hygiene. For example, women are disproportionately responsible for water collection in many households, often at the expense of education and economic opportunities. The report advocates for integrating gender equity into WASH policies and ensuring that women’s and girls’ voices are included in decision-making processes. Enhanced data collection and monitoring are also identified as key to addressing gender disparities in WASH services.
